Connect Pass
This Is The Place
August 7, 2009
On Friday we used the 2nd day of our connect passes and went to the This Is The Place Monument and State Park.
It is the place that the pioneers came into the Salt Lake Valley and Brigham Young declared that "This is the right place". There is a pioneer city that has been built there for people to see and experience what it was like in the early days of Utah.
One of the first things we saw was the pioneer school house. There was a "pioneer" teacher there that was presenting the lessons of the day.
The students were instructed to write their name in their best handwriting on their chalkboard.
Meghan was proud of her work (or her mom's work) and wanted the teacher to see that her name was on the chalkboard.
Time to leave school and find other fun things to do.
After school we took the girls to ride a pony. We tried to put Claire on the pony in front of Meghan but she didn't want anything to do with being on something so big and scarry. So Meghan rode alone and enjoyed it.
Next it was time to mingle with the smaller animals. This time Claire was the brave one. Claire wanted to pet all the animals, but Meghan was a little tentative and had to have a little coaxing.
We finished petting the animals and it was time to explore the city a little bit. I found a building that was named after one of my pioneer relatives. It is the Ottinger-Little Firehouse. My dad's family name (and my maiden name) is Little. Jesse Little (our relative) had a part in helping the pioneers get to Utah. He also played a part in the settling of Utah.
Jesse C. Little was named Chief Engineer when the first non-volunteer fire department was created. He helped create the first manually pumped engine.
This is the monument to mark the declaration by Brigham Young that "This is the right place" and the pioneers entering Salt Lake Valley. This monument was here as I was growing up. It used to be the only thing here - the pioneer village is a recent addition and continues to grow.

As we were in line to get in - Ray and Scott found some pioneer puzzle games that they were trying to figure out. Scott didn't take too long to figure out how to get the ring off of the connected horseshoes. Ray was able to get the 2 curled nails apart but had a hard time getting them put back together.

Ray and Dana - Bowery and church on the left, and the main street behind.
