Orem High School Homecoming 2009

Shaun Goes to
Orem High Homecoming
His 1st Date Dance

September 26, 2009

Shaun took Dani Gardner to the Orem High School Homecoming dance. The kids always have a day date before the dance. Shaun was with a group of 4 other boys and their dates. Out of their group of 10 people, 8 of them are in marching band and they had a marching band competition that afternoon. They decided they had time for breakfast before the competition so they each brought something and they had breakfast in our backyard. The boys cooked bacon and French toast and they had orange juice with it. Charlie was out with them most of the time and I think that he had more than he should have of their breakfast - the rest of the day he acted like he didn't feel very good. After breakfast they played Croquet and Blongo Ball. They seemed to have a fun time together. It was a little bit funny that one time when we looked outside to see how they were doing they were standing in a circle talking and the girls were on one side and the boys were on the other.

We forgot to tell Shaun everything that we should have about going to a dance. We forgot to tell him that he needed to order a corsage ahead of time. Since he didn't have one ordered we had to find one and it wasn't a very cheap one - but it was very pretty. I am glad the florist could do one that day.

The kids all went to their marching band competition in Payson. After they were done, we stayed to watch the final 2 bands and then we brought Shaun and 3 other kids home. They had 20 minutes until they were supposed to be at Steven's house for dinner. Steven got his mom to have it 30 minutes later so the kids had about 50 minutes to get ready.

I took Shaun to pick up Dani (since he doesn't have his license yet) and since they missed dance pictures at the school we had to get some when Shaun picked her up. There was me, Dani's grandma, brother, and sister all taking pictures of them.

They went to Steven's house for dinner. Shaun couldn't believe how nice she made it. They had Chicken Cordon Blue, baked potatoes, string beans with bacon in it, and a salad. Shaun said there was a nice tablecloth, candles and music. Steven's mom even dished up the plates in an elegant way and served them to the kids. Shaun was very impressed. After the dance they went back to Steven's house for desert of a chocolate fountain with everything. There was angel food cake, Oreo cookies, marshmallows, cinnamon bears, strawberries and lots of other things to be dipped in chocolate.
Shaun had a good time.

Mount Nebo Marching Band Competition

Orem High Marching Band
At Mount Nebo
Marching Band Competition
September 26, 2009

The Orem High Golden Tigers Marching Band went to their first competition for the 2009 season. Their show is called La vida Breva. It was in Payson Utah at Payson High School. Orem High Marching Band received 2nd place in their division, and Timpview High received 1st place.

Me and Ray dropped Shaun off at the school to go to the competition. Then we went to Alpine to see Dad Walker at Weber and Ann's house. After our visit, we thought we left with enough time to see a couple of bands perform before Orem High. When we were going, we got into BYU football traffic (but the game had all ready started - why were so many people late for the game?) and then we got to Spanish Fork and the traffic started slowing down. There was road construction and the road went to 1 lane by Payson. We went 6 miles per hour for about 20 minutes. I was really afraid that we wouldn't make it for Orem's performance. We had about made it to the exit in Payson and a big semi truck that was a few card behind us, blocked the road so cars couldn't keep coming up and getting in the open lane ahead of everyone. That made it so we finally started moving. We made it to the competition about 5 minutes before Orem High was on. I am sure glad we made it in time. It took us more than an hour to get from Alpine to Payson. What a long trip.

Watch Out Everyone

Shaun Gets His Learner's Permit
September 24, 2009

Watch out everyone - a new driver on the road.

Shaun is finally in drivers education this semester. He didn't take it his sophomore year in school because he thought that' since his birthday was in May that he would take driver's ed. in the summer. Well, Troopers Drum and Bugle Corps came along, and it was more important than taking drivers ed. So Shaun is now in drivers education as a Junior in high school. His teacher kept making fun of him because he was the oldest one in the class and about the only one who didn't have his permit yet.

It took Shaun two tries to get his permit. We went at 7:00 a.m. on a Monday morning, early in September. Shaun was filling out his application when we realized that he probably needed a birth certificate to show his age etc. We had brought 2 things that proved our address but that was it. We should have thought about it a little harder. So later Shaun was able to take his test at school and we went with all of the proper documentation on September 24 to get his permit.

He is now official and can drive (with a parent in the other front seat of course). In 6 months and with lots of hours of experience he will be able to get the real thing.

Orem High School
Marching Band Family Night
September 21, 2009

Orem High Marching Band has a tradition of having a family night to debut their show the Monday before their first competition. This year Mr. Summers invited some other schools to participate in this exhibition. The brand new high school West Lake came, Timpanogos (and they finally had real uniforms) attended and Payson High School came too. It was a fun night and fun to see more than just one show.

Shaun has a date for Orem High Homecoming

Shaun Asks His Date
to Orem High Homecoming
September 9, 2009

Shaun recruited a mariachi band (of his fellow marching band friends) to help him in his escapade to invite Danni Gardner to Orem High School Homecoming. Right after marching band I brought the band to our house so they could practice for 10 minutes (actually so I could go pick Ray up from the bus stop). Then, I took them to Danni's house so they could play their song of Veggi Tales for her. It happened that she had left with her young women's group to hike up to the "Y" at 6:30, and we arrived at her house at 6:40. (She usually had young women's at 7:00), so Shaun had just missed her. Shaun decided that they would play for her mom and that I would record it so he could put it on YouTube. She would have to be asked through the video. It was cute, and Danni's mom loved it. I loved it too. Shaun and his friends are very creative.

Here are some pictures from their performance.

"Have We Got A Boy For You!!" Shaun joins in.

How high can Shaun scream on his squeaky trumpet?

After the performance, Shaun had a block of cheese for Danni.

You can watch the show on this link. Enjoy!

Danni Answers
September 10, 2009
The next night, after we had turned out the lights and had gone to bed, the door bell rang. Shaun answered the door. This is what he found....

She used about 80 glow sticks to give her answer.

Shaun helps Tyler get a Date to Homecoming

Shaun Helps Tyler
Ask His Date to Homecoming
September 5, 2009

On Saturday, Shaun helped Tyler Ashton ask his date to homecoming. Shaun dressed up like a commando and Tyler dressed up in a gorilla suit. They went to the girls house, and the commando and gorilla were fighting. After the fight, Shaun - the commando - went up and told the girl that "Tyler offers his protection against gorillas if she would go with him to the homecoming dance."

Here are picture of Shaun the commando, with his paintball gun and his air soft gun. When he went to the girl's house he took a couple of his Nerf guns instead.

After he got back and washed off the paint - he found out that his face didn't like being painted.

Grandpa Walker's Birthday Party - 93 years old

Dad Walker at Red Robin
To Get His Free Birthday Burger
Saturday, September 5, 2009

Saturday is our day to make sure that Ray's Dad, Weber Read Walker has dinner, and it is our chance to spend some time with him. I had signed him up to get the free birthday burger at Red Robin, and we decided to get him out of his house and take him to celebrate almost being 93 years old. When we were deciding what to order (never a problem for me - I always get the Royal Red Robin - my favorite) Ray's dad told us that he wanted something light because he couldn't eat much, and wasn't very hungry. We told him that Red Robin doesn't have light, and we just needed to order him his free birthday burger. He decided he wanted chicken rather than a hamburger, and so Ray ordered him a Teriyaki Chicken Burger. Dad Walker also wanted either buttermilk or lemonade. Of course, Red Robin doesn't have buttermilk, but they do have great lemonade, so that is what he had with his chicken burger.

When they brought our meals, they were giant sandwiches, with the best steak fries. Dad Walker really enjoyed eating his sandwich. He ended up eating all but 2 bites, he ate most of his french fries, and 1 1/2 glasses of "some of the best lemonade" that he has had. There are many times that Dad Walker will hardly eat anything for a meal. We are always happy and proud of ourselves when we find something that he enjoys so much and that he will eat.

On the way to Red Robin Dad Walker started asking about the BYU football game, which was the first game of the year. He has always loved watching BYU football games. Ray thought that he would be worn out from going out to dinner and didn't think that he could handle being away from home long enough to watch the game too. Dad Walker was asking enough questions about the game that Ray decided he should give him the option to come over and watch it if he wanted. There was no hesitation, Dad Walker wanted to come watch the game with Ray. BYU is ranked #20, and they played Oklahoma who is ranked #3. The game was in the new Dallas Cowboys stadium - It was a huge game for BYU. Dad Walker enjoyed the game and he actually stayed awake through the whole game. BYU was predicted to lose by a huge margin, but ended up winning with a score of 14-13. It was a happy day for BYU fans, and a great game for Dad Walker to see.

Family Birthday Party
For Dad Walker
At Chuck-A-Rama
Monday, September 7, 2009

The whole Walker family was invited to go to Chuck-A-Rama with Dad Walker to celebrate his 93rd birthday. His birthday is on September 8, but Monday. September 7 was Labor Day holiday and easier for everyone to get together because most of the family were off work for the holiday. Dad Walker chose to go to Chuck-A-Rama. It is a place that he has loved for a long time. Mom and Dad Walker hardly ever went out to eat, but they had a good friend and neighbor that would occasionally take them to Chuck-A-Rama for lunch. I think that it is a place that holds some good memories for him. All of Dad Walker's kids came and some of the grandkids. It was a fun get together.
Dad Walker always likes to make faces when we take pictures of him. His birthday party was no exception.

The servers at Chuck-A-Rama brought Dad Walker a root beer float with a candle in it and we all sang to him. We told him to blow out the candle, but he had different ideas. He wanted to pinch the flame out with his fingers - but changed his mind when everyone started protesting.

So he finally blew out the candle.

Here he is making silly faces again. Shaun is on the left in the background, and Ray's brother Leon Walker on the right.

Shaun was stuffed full and ready to go home before the visiting had ended.
We are glad that we have Dad Walker as part of the family. We love his teasing, his positive attitude and his love for everyone. He always has a hug for others and loves his family. We are glad that we have had the chance to spend more time with him the last few years. We love you Dad Walker!
