Red Rocks and BOA Competition Nov 6-7, 2009

Red Rocks
Marching Band Competition
November 6, 2009
and
Bands of America Competition
November 7, 2009

Shaun with the Orem High School Marching Band competed in St. George, Utah on Friday, November 6, 2009 at the Red Rocks Marching Band Competition. They placed first in their division. Shaun had three parts that were a trumpet trio. They did a great job on Friday. Dana (mom), Ray (dad), Grandpa Harold & Sharon Little, Sister Heidi & Scott Christensen and Meghan & Claire came to watch the performance.

Saturday, November 7, was the Bands of America Marching Band Competition. Thirty-six bands came from many parts of the midwest-western United States to compete. The bands competed during the day in their divisions, and they had to be scored in the top 10 (of all divisions) to make it to the finals that were Saturday night. Shaun with Orem High Marching Band placed 1st in their division, and they also scored into the top 10 marching bands, which meant that they had the opportunity to compete in the BOA Finals on Saturday night. The finals don't divide the bands up into divisions, they are all competing against each other - whether they are large or small. Orem High School Marching Band ended up in 7th place out of all the bands at BOA. That was an excellent finish for them. They scored higher than a bunch of the larger bands.
After the competition to announce the winners the bands all lined up and marched into the field for the awards presentations. Orem High Marching Band is lined up single file in the line that is closest to the bleachers.

The bands all came onto the field from the back. It looked awesome. Orem High Marching Band is on the 45 yard line to the left of the 50.

The bands lined up on the field. OHS is on the 45 yard line to the left of the 50 yard line. This is where they were awarded their first place medals for being 1st in their division.

The other side of the field.

Drum majors lined up for the presentations of the awards. OHS Drum majors in white/OHS Color Guard in black between the 45 and the 50 yard lines.

The marching bands were dismissed to break ranks and mingle with the other marching bands. It was interesting how all the bands migrated over to where the American Fork Band was.

They are all getting closer...

and closer. I guess the American Fork spot is the place to be on the field.

Visit to Heidi & Scott's house
November 4-5 2009

Ray and Dana went to visit Heidi, Scott, Meghan and Claire for a few days before we went to Shaun's marching band competitions in St. George. We went to the park that is close to their house and Meghan and Claire found some boys to play with. Meghan seemed to think that she was as big as they were.

Claire really likes Charlie. She seems to be the animal lover of their family.

Meghan and Claire thought that it was pretty funny to be in Charlie's house and Charlie to be outside.

We went with Heidi, Meghan and Claire to the Children's Museum. Claire wanted to play in the baby area (even though she was too big now)

Meghan had fun painting in the art room at the Children's Museum.

Claire also enjoyed painting.

Claire had fun playing the pipes.

Meghan dressed up like a princess and was ready for a show.

Claire was hungry for grapes and wanted to buy them all.

We brought Claire and Meghan some little tutu skirts. Paula, my boss, had some kits from Enrichment meeting in her ward and knew that some of us at work would love to have them. Claire wore hers for a short time and then wanted it off.

Grandpa Ray, Meghan, Grandma Dana, Claire and of course Charlie

Meghan loved dancing in her tutu.

Claire in her tutu.

It was a fun visit. After our visit we went to St. George and stayed with my dad. Heidi, Scott and the girls also came and we had a fun weekend together.

Halloween

Charlie was a bumble bee (again). He wasn't very excited to have a costume on.

Braxton came to trick-or-treat at our house. He was the turtle Squirt from the movie Finding Nemo. He was very cute.

We took Braxton trick-or-treating at a few houses in our neighborhood. He liked the dog at the Francis' house more than the candy.

After 2 houses it was time to sit down and take inventory,

And maybe try a few.

Shaun, Anastasia and Braxton on Halloween. Shaun and Anastasia were ready to go take Anastasia's brothers and sisters trick-or-treating.

Orem High School
Halloween Band Concert
October 28, 2009

Shaun has quite the costume for the Orem High School Halloween Band concert. The students could all dress up for the concert...and I guess Shaun chose to be a nerd or something like that.

I think that Anastasia was a little embarrassed to be with Shaun while he was dressed so funny.

This was the concert that Shaun was the versatile player. This song he was playing the trombone for Jazz Band. He is on the left end of the trombone line.

Shaun is playing the trumpet here - he is second from the right. Shaun also played a coronet in the concert. He had a different instrument for each Jazz Band song.
Shaun had one of the solos for one of the Wind Symphony pieces. It was a fun concert with a lot of fun music.

Choir Concert
October 21, 2009

We attended Shaun's first choir concert of the school year. It was his first concert that he was in Orem High School Chamber Choir. The concert was fun and the choirs were good. This first picture was A Cappella singing from Lion King.

This is A Cappella in their formal wear. Shaun had to borrow a tuxedo from a former student because Mr. Keyes forgot that Shaun was in band when the choir was being fit for tuxedos. We had to go later to get Shaun's tuxedo from Clark's Tuxedos.
